This is more or less an extended introduction, it's not supposed to be an entertaining read.

My name still is Alexander Knopf and I still live in germany.
My address, conforming to german standards, is:
Fliegerstraße 18a
31535 Neustadt
germany

And as all the people who regularly get snail mail spam will tell you, it is very fortunate that I’m required by german law to post my address.

I was born July 5th, 1982 in Hannover, germany. I got my first Computer for Christmas 1987, my very own apple //e. unfortunately it broke within 2 weeks. the next Computer I got after that was a Commodore PC 286 with a monochrome Display. The first programming experience I had was on my Father’s 386 SX 16 in 1989. My brother had gotten a book, that included a Floppy with an IDE, about Turbo Pascal.

I haven’t really been serious about programming until I got my very own 486 DX-2 80. That cost me all the money I had saved. I eventually downloaded the sourcecode of Circlemud and started reading that and playing around with it. Ever since that time I had a thing for C and apparently huge projects just for learning a language. So with that came the need to solve an RSA challenge number as an assembly language learning project (needless to say that failed).

Since then I have started working on my own MUD and am trying to write that one from scratch. It is actually far enough now that it can be started and it will run, with users being able to log in. I have to admit, however, that some other people would get that far over a weekend. However, that will be my learning project for threaded programming under Linux, with C++ and MySQL(R).

This blog will mostly be about me learning how to be a great programmer. I will focus on threaded programming (eventually) with C++ under linux.
